Most of your petrol money never was petrol.
Pick a fuel, then your state — watch where every rupee of the price actually lands. Central excise is the same nationwide; the rest is your state.
In Delhi, a ₹102 litre of petrol = ₹43 imported crude, ₹36 tax (₹20 central excise + ₹17 state VAT/cess), and only ₹22 of actual Indian value-add — refining, oil-company margin, and the dealer's ₹3.83 commission.
Same crude. Same central tax. Your state decides the rest.
Central excise (₹20/L) is identical nationwide. The gap between states is pure state VAT. Total tax loaded onto one litre of petrol, heaviest first.
How we know.
Every number is sourced and tiered, same as any product on Parakhi. The taxes are hard government data. The crude-vs-refining split of the pre-tax base is a modelled estimate — flagged as Tier 2.
Reconstructed pump price = national dealer base + central excise + dealer commission + state VAT/cess; actual pump price varies ±₹1–2 with local freight and daily revision. Some states levy “X% or ₹Y//L, whichever higher” — we show the ad-valorem rate. Parakhi is open-source, MIT.
